Sun in the Dark

from The Rucksack Song (Bundle) by Alex Stolze

/

about

Sun in the Dark - Alex Stolze’s new single - brings a message of hope and solidarity. His reverberating vocal sings the story of a young activist who “cares for the ones who can’t be seen” while rich textures of plucked and bowed violin notes swirl over minimal pulsing drum machines, giving way to swells of bright, melodic synthesiser hooks.

Throughout the imagery of Alex’s first album Outermost Edge, there was a clear sense of solidarity with migrant and refugee voices, a concept he explored further in his collaboration with Ben Osborn, 2019’s Letters from the Border. Building on this, Sun in the Dark feels like a hymn to the generation of young people around the world that have dedicated themselves to the support of refugees, migrants and other disadvantaged communities. “You’ve always known wrong and right and what it means to fight for the helpless and poor”, sings Alex’s plaintive vocal - infused at once an awareness of the darkness of our times and a hope and belief in something better.

Musically, Alex’s layering of strings, minimal electronica and echoing vocal is reminiscent of Arthur Russell, while the classical and folk influences and violin-led compositional style bring to mind Patrick Wolf’s early work. But it’s clear that, two years on from his highly acclaimed debut, Alex is forging a musical style very much of his own - driven by an admirable commitment to political change.
